sep 24, 1889 - Tenterfield Oration
Description:
The Tenterfield Oration was one of the two major events that lead to Federation. The Tenterfield Oration was a speech presented by Sir Henry Parkes, the Premier of New South Wales at the time, on the 24th of September 1889.
Sir Henry Parkes talked in front of around 80 to 100 people about Federation. Parkes delivered three main points that day to the public about the benefits of Federation. His points included a unified defence force, free trade between the colonies and a uniform rail system. Parkes' speech is considered as one of the major events leading to Federation because of its success and positive appeal to the public. Sir Henry Parkes later gave 15 more speeches outlining the benefits of federating Australia.
