On the 1st of January, 1901, Australia didn't only celebrate a new year, but the birth of theirnew nation. Australia became Australia on this day and onwards. Before this, Australia was 6 colonies which are now the 6 states and 2 territories. Each colony had their own laws, defence force and transport.
When voting came, Western Australia did not take part in voting. From the other 5 colonies, 219,712 people said yes to federating and 108,354 said no. A majority was yes so Australia federated. Edmund Barton was elected as the first Prime Minister of Australia.
