On the 1st of January 1901 Australia officially became a nation. This followed the creation of Australia’s constitution and each of the six individual British colonies of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia voted in referendums, to join as one and create the nation that we now live in, Australia. A ceremony was held in Centennial park to announce the Federation of Australia. Approximately 2 months later Australia’s first Federal Election was held and Australia’s first Prime Minister was elected, his name was Edmund Barton
