dec 3, 1854 - The Eureka Stockade

Description:

Miners began building the Eureka stockade barrier on the 30th of November 1854 in the town of Ballarat. This followed disagreements between miners and Police as the miners accused the police of bribery and corruption. This followed the death of James Scobie and the trial of the hotel owner where he was killed. It also involved licence hunts and unfair fees for mining licences. Miners burned their licences and refused to cooperate with the soldiers in the days before the Eureka Stockade. Miners spent 3 days building the stockade. At 2:30 am on the 3rd of December 1854 300 Soldiers and Police men invaded the Eureka stockade. The battle continued for around 20-30 minutes, about 30 men and 1 woman were killed and many others were injured. This included both soldiers and miners.
