Although there were rumours of gold discoveries in Australia as early as 1814, It was on February 12, 1851, that a prospector named Edward Hargraves was credited with officially discovering gold near Orange. Soon the word spread, and people were coming to Australia from all over the world to try to find their fortune. People walked from Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane to both NSW and Victoria, some people left their families for years just to have a chance at finding gold. Gold was responsible for a significant boom in migration and a healthy economy for Australia.
