Caroline Flack (RIP) was the host of the X-Factor for a long time including when 1D were on it. Caroline, in this picture, was 32 years old while Harry was 17. This means there was a 15 year age gap between the two.

Now, I'm going to go ahead and try and debunk this relationship on the front end here so you don't have to think about the fact that Harry's friends and family might have let him date a 32 year old while he was a teenager. The X-Factor is a show that was owned primarily by Simon Cowell, who also was the manager of One Direction and the proprietary owner of Syco Records which was the record label 1D was signed under. Caroline was the host of the X-Factor which meant that she was directly tied with Simon as was Harry.

One Direction's season of the X-Factor was the most watched season of all time. It's average viewer count was 13.8 million per episode and was always in the number 1 spot for the slot it filled. 2011's season (Little Mix's season) had an average viewership per episode of 10.4 million which was a decrease by over 3 million people. Although it was still fairly highly rated, the numbers did fall pretty significantly, and it was not always in the top slot for the time it filled.

Controversy gets you views and clicks. People wanted to watch Caroline Flack and Harry Styles from the beloved One Direction from the most successful season of all time burn to the ground. How could the relationship not fail? She was 32 and he was 17! People called out the relationship all the time in the media for clearly being for PR. So there you go.

This just goes to show you exactly what they will do to people in this industry.
