On the 1st of July 1851, the Legislative Council of the newly created Victoria was established. Before 1851, Victoria was a district of New South Wales known as Port Phillip District. Port Phillip was renamed as the Colony of Victoria from 1851 until federation in 1901 when it became a sate, uniting forces with the other five self-governing states to become one nation.Added to timeline:
