may 21, 1962 - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People Get The Right To Vote
Description:
After not appearing on the constitution, Aboriginal and Tores Strait Islander people won the right to vote in Australia. Even after they won the vote, these people still didn't get equal rights compared to the white people. After Federation, the government made laws to improve the living conditions of Australians that were in need but the Indigenous Australians were excluded from these laws. They would still be punished if they practised their culture or spoke their language instead of English. They wanted to the Aboriginal people to believe in Christianity and act white instead of black. But this was a monumental time for Australian History adding the fact that more than 90% of the country voting a firm yes.
