oct 1, 1960 - Westfield Civic Improvement Association
Description:
A group of residents of Windsor Avenue had observed issues with town leadership neglecting to effectively serve its people. The town refused to take responsibility over maintenance and improvements on Windsor Ave, such as planting trees. This resulted in the formation of the Westfield Civic Improvement Association.
As this group grew, it came to place a special focus on the Black community in Westfield. Over the next years, they would lead projects, give speeches, and write letters to different authorities and media sources concerning the lack of representation and mistreatment of Black people in local schools, housing, employment, and town government. They also hosted a multitude of activities to encourage interracial bonding and proper education of Black history and issues facing Black people.
