jan 1, 1999 - Robeson Park Built
Description:
The Town of Westfield received a grant from Union County to establish Robeson Memorial Park, a Pocket Park to honor Paul Robeson.
Paul Robeson was a well known social activist and actor, as well as a past Westfield resident and exceptional student. Mr. Robeson was born to a runaway slave in 1898, and lived in Westfield during the years between 1906 and 1910, during which time Mr. Robeson became a notable athlete and student. Despite racist opposition, Mr. Robeson won an academic scholarship to Rutgers University and later graduated as class valedictorian. As a singer and actor, Mr. Robeson’s roles in films and on the stage allowed for more African-American representation in the media. He spent his life fighting against racism and inequality, and helped to pave the way to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s for many.
Paul Robeson Memorial Park is located on the corner of the intersection between Rahway Avenue and Waterson Street, near the location of Mr. Robeson’s former home in Westfield. The park features plantings and benches centered around a plaque commemorating Mr. Robeson.
