dec 3, 1854 - The Eureka Stockade
Description:
Since the discovery of gold Thousands of people all over the world came to Ballarat for gold. However the treatment for the miners were extremely harsh. At the time the Queen Victoria claimed the area and whatever gold that was found would go to her. Miners had to pay a monthly gold license which was a tax pay to mine on the goldfields. This was extremely unfair because most people didn't have enough money to pay each month because they werent lucky enough to find any gold. With all this unfair treatment matters got worse as James Scobie; a rich gold digger, killed a miner. Miners protested their rights and began to burn their licences.
All of this led to the Eureka Stockade. On December 3rd around noon 300 police and soldiers fought against the miners. Six police died and 22 soldiers died. Few miners escaped and 13 miners were charged with treason.
The reason why this was so impactful was because it introduced rights for people in Australia. It also showed democracy because many victorians protested for the 13 miners to be free of treason with votes.
