On the 1st of January 1901, the six seperate British colonies, Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia agreed to unite together as The Commonwealth of Australia.

This event has contributed to the development of Australian society because if we didn't vote, we wouldn't of become a Nation like we are today. We would still be six seperate colonies. It was the first time in history that a group of people voted to become a new Nation but the colonies were still under the law making power of Britain. The 1st of January was a very important day to Australians.
