aug 22, 1770 - Captain Cook Discovered the East Coast of Australia

Description:

On the 22nd of August 1770, Captain James Cook discovered the East Coast of Australia. He discovered Botany Bay. He didn't actually discover the East Coast because the Aboriginal Australians were already there but he didn't care.

Captain Cook was a British explorer who was on a Pacific Voyage when he found the East Coast. He was on the ship called the HMS Endeavour. When he found the East Coast of Australia, he claimed the land for Britain. He and his crew wanted to observe and record the the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun. When Captain Cook claimed the East Coast, he named the land New South Wales.

This changed Australia because Captain Cook claimed the land without thinking about the Aboriginal Australians who were the original owners of the land. This shows that people didn't care about the Aboriginal Australians back then and they thought they were fauna- animals. This was discrimination against the Aboriginal community.
