apr 5, 1856 - Booker T. Washington Born

Description:

Born a slave on a Virginia plantation. Promoted the idea of black self-help and economic progress. Built a platform for other black leaders to follow, and was the first high-profile black leader in the USA.

Believed hard work, education and seriousness of purpose would lead to African Americans showing their true worth ; education was key to the emergence of future leaders such as MLK. Decided that political rights should be abandoned in favour of personal improvement and believed African Americans should be SEPARATE and not mix with white society. Seemed to understand education would lead to economic power which would lead to political power as they'd be in demand for their skills. Knew there was no real chance of gaining equality at this time in the South so first aimed at getting black people out of poverty.

Won the support of many including some powerful white people. Gained the ear of Presidents and the respect of many more liberal-minded whites.

Whilst encouraging African Americans to accept their inferiority, was secretly funding opposition to Jim Crow laws.
