Bonaparte managed to overthrow the Directory by a coup d'etat.

Napoleon became the "First Consul", with two other consuls serving as consultative voices. He drafted a new constitution - Constitution of the Year VIII, which confirmed his power. Then he moved on to reform the country and end the War of the Second Coalition.
