may 18, 1792 - Targowica
Description:
Targowica Confederation
The creators of the Constitution didn't win many allies outside of the country, and Russia was particularily displeased with the perspective of a strong Poland.
Szczęsny Potocki, Seweryn Rzewuski, and Ksawery Branicki schemed against the king and the constitution. Seeking support in Russia, they gave Catherine the Great a pretext to invade. On 18 May, an act of Confederation was signed in Targowica.
To the dismay of confederates, it was met with little support, and a war in defense of the constitution began.
