Description:

Disaster struck on August 1899, went to hurricanes ravage the island: the 1899 San Sicario hurricane on August 8, and an unnamed hurricane in August 22. Approximately 3400 people died in the floods and thousands were left without shelter, food, or work. The effects on the economy were devastating: millions of dollars were lost due to the destruction of the majority of the sugar and coffee plantations. Afterwords nearly 5000 Puerto Ricans migrated to Hawaii by 1910 to work in the sugar plantations of Hawaii.
