China has told the British government it has no right to offer residency to millions of Hongkongers, warning that it could take “corresponding measures” to prevent the move.

Hours after the Chinese ambassador to the UK was summoned to the Foreign Office, the embassy in London issued a statement reasserting its view that all Hong Kong residents were Chinese nationals, regardless of whether they held a British passport or a British National Overseas passport.

It accused the government of breaking its promise in a UK-China memo not to extend the right of abode to Hong Kong residents with BNO passports. (The Times)
