Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a Carolingian monarch who established a substantial empire in France and Germany. He also was known to especially encourage education. He was the first emperor to rule the "continent" since the Roman Empire and was considered to be a powerful adversary of the Byzantine Empire.
