aug 3, 1871 - Treaty No. 1

Description:

Treaty No. 1 was signed at Lower Fort Garry, Manitoba. It was the first of the 11 Numbered Treaties and was signed between the British Crown and the Ojibwa and Swampy Cree Nations. The First Nations were to “cede, release, surrender, and yield up to Her Majesty the Queen” a large piece of land. Livestock, agricultural equipment, and schools were promised to the First Nations communities in turn for their hunting land.
