jul 20, 1871 - B.C joins Confederation

Description:

British Columbia became Canada’s sixth province. After the gold rush ended in the 1860s, British Columbia fell into a recession and was in a lot of debt. Joining Confederation would help pay for their infrastructure and roads. They were also offered a railroad connecting them to the rest of Canada, and joining Confederation would get rid of any fear over annexation by the United States. The United States had purchased Alaska in 1867 and had their eyes on British Columbia next.
