jan 1, 1521 - Charles V, The Edict of Worms

Description:

The Edict of Worms was a decree issued on May 26th, 1521 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. It forbade anyone to “receive, defend, sustain or favor Martin Luther”. In Charles’ eyes, Martin Luther was a heretic, and even labeled him as “an enemy of the state”. This was due to the controversial 95 Theses that Luther posted onto the church door. Luther had challenged the absolute authority of the pope and the Church. To protect the Church, the pope and the sale of indulgences, The Edict of Worms was written. Although it was never fully enforced, it was very important because it began to show the true colors of the Catholic Church.
