jan 1, 1690 - Locke, Two Treatise of Government

Description:

The Two Treatise of Government were written by John Locke in 1689. The First Treatise was a criticism Patriarcha, a book which argued in favor of the divine right of kings. Locke believed that the divine right would eventually be the downfall of all governments. He believed that Filmer’s view on patriarchism would only lead to slaves and “absurdity”. He is rumored to have chosen Filmer as his target because he “carried his argument the farthest”. In The Second Treatise, Locke argues for a more civilized society, and that people form governments through a social contract. This preserves their natural and inalienable rights. It is said that the Two Treatise of Government were also written to justify the Glorious Revolution.
