MySpace was bought by NewsCorp in July of 2005 for $580 million. NewsCorp saw the purchase as a way to advertise for and move traffic to their other websites. This was one of the first major purchases of a social media site proving that they were big business; however, NewsCorp ended up losing money when they sold Myspace again in 2012.
