dec 28, 1786 - 3/5 compromise

Description:

During the 1787 constitutional convention, the north and the south reached an agreement to allow each slave to be worth 3/5 of a person towards population of a state. Therefore the number of people would aide in number of delegates in congress, votes for presidential elections, and the amount of taxes set for a state. The reason for the compromise is because the US was starting to switch from appointing taxes based on amount of territory to number of people. Increasing taxes of the south due to their large slave population would benefit the north. At the same time, since the slaves were being included as a part of the population, the slave owners would have more delegates in congress.

----Video----
The video describes how the slaves became worth 3/5 of a person in terms of population for representation of the states in congress. As usual, the south got more of their way than teh north because South Carolina threatened secession and war.
