Otto begins to suffer from ill health. Symptoms: Weight loss, cough, sinusitis (which will plague Sylvia for her lifetime.) He is short-tempered and irritable. He incorrectly identifies his sickness as lung cancer because he has similar symptoms to a friend and therefore refuses to be diagnosed, as he won't submit to surgery. When Aurelia tries to convince him, it results in "explosive outbursts of anger."
