The Buddhist teachings stressed that one could only reach nirvana by abandoning desires for all Earthly things. Buddhism became a major religious force in India and greatly influenced the culture and government. Buddhism was very important because not only did it affect India but it also spread throughout the world such as China, where it also became an important religion.
