jun 20, 1789 - The Tennis Court Court Oath, Estates General

Description:

On June 20, 1789, member of the French Estates General or the Third Estate (began to call themselves the National Assembly) took the Tennis Court Oath that forced a new Constitution onto the King. The Third Estate initially was comprised of the lower French clergy and commoners who met at an indoor tennis court in defiance of King Louis XVI’s ordered the dispersal of the National Assembly from Versailles. Louis eventually gave in and ordered the clergy and nobility to join with the Third Estate in the National Assembly.
