The Masochism Tango by Tom Lehrer is a parody song that takes a jab at a BDSM relationship.
In the lyrics , Lehrer makes light of dangers of BDSM. He begs for her to blacken his eye, set fire to his tie, needing stitches and having her break his spine. These examples, while humorous in their context, lead those unfamiliar with BDSM to believe that it is commonplace to hurt yourself while participating in scenes. This is far from true.
I do like that Lehrer’s song depicts this as a loving relationship which is what most BDSM relationships are. While it is amusing, it is another example of media misrepresentation that leads to stereotyping.
