jan 1, 1856 - 1856-1858|The Arrow War

Description:

The British were trying to legalize opium trading.
Both Hong Kong and the British signed a 'unfair treaty' which gave the British a lot of land and power, so the British pretty much took over China and kept trading. The Chinese stole a ship called ‘Arrow” and arrested its crew members. They let nine members go but kept three. The next day, British and French troops came to Peking (Now known as Beijing). They burned down the Summer Palace for revenge and retreated a few months later.
