Description:
In 1988 the Iranians accepted a ceasefire after both sides had suffered extensive damage.
IRAN:
-The economy had suffered dramatically
-Despite failing to beat the Iraqis, the Islamic revolution was still growing
IRAQ:
-Iraq was left with huge debts. Saddam Hussein promised recovery but it never came. Life expectancy decreased and infant mortality continued to rise.
-Despite the debts and worsening situation, Saddam continued investing in the military power of Iraq.
-There were riots and strikes in the streets.
-Saddam faced threats from his own army who felt cheated of victory. Attempts were made to overthrow him and many officers were executed. Saddam needed to divert attention from the crisis in Iraq which may have been a reason that he invaded Kuwait.
