mar 16, 1988 - Saddam Hussein and the Kurds

Description:

The Kurds made up 20% of the Iraqi population. They lived in northern Iraq and wanted independence. However, Saddam wanted greater control of the Kurds instead.
Saddam used military force to drive Kurds out of their homes. In March 1988, he bombed the Kurdish city of Halabja with chemical weapons. During his presidency, 180 000 Kurds were killed and another 100 000 fled to neighbouring countries.
