jan 6, 1627 - Company of One
Hundred Associates
founded
Description:
Born of the conflict between the Catholic leadership and missions and the Protestant hunters, coureurs de bois, and traders, the Company of One Hundred Associates was created and given a monopoly over the fur trade with the condition of settling Catholic settlers and converting natives to Catholics with some of the proceeds. It failed to do either very well, and was disbanded eventually, though not before doing irreparable damage to France's ambitions in North America.
