One of the top military units in mainland France was brought to New France and used without mercy against the Iroquois, who, since the founding of Quebec, had been hostile to the French and had been conducting raids on New French settlements. The regiment steamrolled over the Iroquois opposition, winning a temporary respite from Iroquois aggression.
