During the Tang and Song eras Buddhism started to become more popular and a major religion. Two different strands of Buddhism appeared, Pure Land Buddhism and Chan Buddhism. Pure Land Buddhism was more popular among the Chinese people and Chan Buddhism was more popular with the elite. Although Confucian and Daoist scholars started to fear that Buddhism was getting to powerful and convinced the emperor that Buddhism was posing an economic challenge to the empire. Buddhism was important because it influenced Chinese culture and history as well as the culture of other places such as Japan.
