jan 12, 1970 - A shift in auidence

Description:

1970’s During the very harsh times in the world, with events such as the Nixon shock in 1971, or the great oil crisis in 1973, brought about a new feature that would challenge the idea of anime as being only considered as children’s entertainment. Uchū senkan Yamato (Space Battleship Yamato), was released firstly as a TV series in 1974, but then developed as a feature film in 1977, and became a social phenomenon, extraordinarily popular with millions of young adults, showing the shift of target audience, and an age of new ideas with more possibilities and less limitations being introduced to the artists and creators of Anime and Manga. This trend is often seen with a creative medium, that after takes of crisis or extreme challenge on the people, artists find ways of expressing that which people are feeling and manage to make it into something we feel we can overcome, hence showing the mass popularity of creative mediums after milestones of horror in the past, and even present day. While researching the past of Anime and Manga, or just the creative industries and efforts in Japan, we found that this trend is very strong. That after events such as war, famine, disease, or natural disaster, the workers, artists and creators take it into their own hands to challenge the negativity felt by those around them., to come up with something new and amazing, being a new technique, style or company that would improve the products released to the people, as a way of helping to push moral back to a high and joyful place, as recovery is much easier when you have a smile on your face, or a glow in your heart.
