Description:
“In the southern United States, the big plantation owners were anxious to expand in the 1830’s.Their economic and political power faced a serious threat from the rising industry of the North. So they wanted more land, to plant cotton grown by slaves. They also wanted to extend slavery into new areas. This would create more slave states, to balance the ‘free’ states of the North” (pg 24)
“The Anglo-Saxon race must pervade the whole southern extremity of this vast continent. The Mexicans are no better than the Indians and I see no reason why we should not take their land..” (Sam Houston; pg25)
