nov 30, 1956 - Did the Soviet Union sucessfully maintain control in Hungary?

Description:

YES:
-The anti-communist leader was killed
-The rebellion was squashed.
-35000 opponents were arrested
-It showed that Hungary could be controlled through violence
The Hungarian people were scared -> there were no more uprisings until 1989

NO:
-It was obvious that the Hungarian people did not support communism -> no GENUINE IDEOLOGICAL COMMITMENT
-Thousands of people died, giving a negative image for communism
- 20000 people fled to the west

I think Hungary was only controlled successfully in the short term. The USSR were able to physically suppress them using violence however, they were unable to control the minds of the Hungarians. The uprising shows how the Soviet leaders had failed to create any GENUINE IDEOLOGICAL COMMITMENT. It was quite likely that there would be another rebellion in the future.
