jul 19, 64 - Great Fire of Rome 64 CE

Description:

On this day, a fire started within the walls of the city of Rome. By the time the fire was extinguished, 10 of the 14 districts of the city of Rome were burned to the ground. The king at the time, Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (known simply as Nero, the last of the Julio-Claudian family, that of Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar), was said to have started the fires himself in order to gain more property. He was also said to have been playing the fiddle while the city of Rome burned down. Nero denied these allegations, and further blamed the new, small religious group called the Christians for the fires. This was a prime example of the religious persecution of the Christians
