In an attempt to move on past the Civil War days, Congress passed the Amnesty act in May of 1872 which removed restrictions on ex-Confederates with the few exceptions of major Conferderate leaders. One consquence of this act was it allowed southern conservatives to support the Democrats in local/state elections.Added to timeline:
