jun 1, 1844 - "Rain, Steam and Speed"

Description:

What distinguishes Turner from his predecessors (Stubbs, Gainsborough) and his contemporaries (Constable) is the objective interest in the changing landscape. Other artists romanticised the topography, and they approached the land with an aesthetic desire to compose a scene of stunning beauty. Many landscapes featured characters and cattle in the scene, and they stand like extras in a movie adorning the composition. Turner embraced the changes he saw in the world and privately admired technology and the raw energy that new forms of transportation brought to its citizens.
