dec 3, 1808 - Election of 1808

Description:

For the Democratic-Republican nomination for president, Jefferson supported his close friend, James Madison, who helped write and ratify the Constitution and develop the Democratic-Republican party. Despite his weak public speaking skills, stubborn temperament, and lack of political skills, Madison was nominated by a caucus of congressional Democratic-Republicans. Other factions of the party nominated two other candidates. Still, Madison won a majority of electoral votes and defeated his opponents. Despite this, the Federalists were able to acquire a majority in Congress as a result of widespread unhappiness with the effects of the embargo.
