feb 27, 1936 - 1936 Spanish General Election

Description:

Held on February 16, 1936. There were 473 seats in the unicameral Cortes General. The winners of the elections were the Popular front, the Republican left, Republican Union, Communist Party of Spain, and many others. Their coalition commanded a narrow lead over the divided opposition in terms of the popular vote. However, but a lead took over the main opposition of the party CEDA in terms of seats. The election was prompted by the collapse of the government led by Alejandro Lerroux and his Radical Republican Party. Manuel Azaña would replace Manuel Portela Valladares the caretaker, and prime minister.
