On May 29 1453, Sultan Mehmed brought the Ottomans with him to conquer the Eastern Roman Empire. Mehmed wanted to conquer Eastern Rome because conquering them would make them the most important power in southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, which would also give them expansion opportunities. Mehmed also needed to live up to what his father was and to the expectations given. Hagia Sophia the church was also converted into a mosque by Mehmed. This had a huge impact on Christianity and the Holy Roman Empire and caused the rise of Islam which went to North Africa. Also, Greek Christians living in Turkey left to Italy and brought their wealthiness and knowledge with them which helped spark the Renaissance.
