The Know-Nothing Party, so nicknamed because of its roots as a secret organization, experienced a brief rise in the 1850's as an anti-immigration nationalist party. Weak from the start because of internal disagreement over its stance, its members mostly fragmented into the Republican and Constitutional Union parties after the Dred Scott Decision.
