feb 2, 1832 - American System
Description:
Championed by professional compromiser Henry Clay for much of the first half of the nineteenth century, the American System was a Federalist-inspired plan that proposed high tariffs to promote industry, support of the federal bank system, and more funding for infrastructure, among other things. Particularly sectional and divisive among these was the high tariffs plan, which somewhat came to fruition in the teriffs that led to the Nullification Crisis.
