Description:

The opening of the Erie Canal, running from Lake Erie to Buffalo, opened up new opportunities for American immigration and improved the transport of goods between New England and the Midwest. In regards to sectionalism, it also led directly to a rise in the population and significance of New York City and New England as a whole, leading to a growth in industry and manufacturing that would culminate in the controversial Tariff of 1828 and the Nullification Crisis.
