nov 6, 1860 - Election of 1860

Description:

Anti-slavery Democrat Abraham Lincoln won the Presidency in the election of 1860, comfortably sweeping 180 electoral votes and outpacing his closest opponent, John C. Breckinridge (who would go on to serve as vice president of the Confederacy). The divide between pro-slavery south and anti-slavery north was bottomed out at this result, and believing Lincoln's election to be a threat to slavery, seven states seceded from the union immediately, and formed the Confederate States of America.
