God had stated that some of the tribes did not follow through with their promises that they made to him. A prophet told Jeroboam that he would rule over ten out of the twelve tribes. Jeroboam returned from Egypt and pressed for lighter taxes, Rehoboam said no so Israel split into two kingdoms.
