aug 21, 1970 - 1970 GTH Automotive Fox V6 4x4

Description:

In 1970, GTH Automotive released the Fox V6 4x4, and it became a popular topic of conversation. Reason? There was not much orthodox about this car .. at all.

To start, it was a tiny car weighing less then 800kg, but still packed a 2.5L twincarb V6 engine, making 156 horsepower. As that wasn't enough, the carburator stuck out of the hood like a sore thumb, although it did indeed turn many heads on the streets.

It was also 4x4 with manual locking differentials, and with a decent ground clearance, it was quite capable of being taken off the beaten path. It has a side-exhaust on the left side and a single top-down wiper on the front windshield. Combine all of this, with a mustardy yellow-brownish paintjob, and you got yourself quite the .. something.

The Fox was pretty reasonably priced at launch, setting you back $3.400 back in 1970 ($20.100 in standard 2012 Automation $) which was around the average price for a new car back then. It became known as "The Mustard" due to it's paintjob and became a bit of a joke, and if memes were a thing back in the early 70's, it would surely have become the ultimate meme car.

Saleswise it wasn't great, to no one's surprise really, and had a pretty specific demographic. It was a weird, quirky, sporty, tiny little hatchback and the majority of buyers were younger men, looking for a different type of sporty fun. But all things considered, the Fox was actually a really fun car to drive and quite a few of them got converted to race in rally-cross and rally. It wasn't particulary successful in that regards, but usually gave quite a show.

Today, you can still spot the rare Fox on the streets, but there are not so many of them still in use. Some of the rally versions have been preserved quite well and turn up every now and then at car shows and vintage car exhibition races. The stock ones are not particularly valuable, but a rally version will set you back a good sum. The last transaction took place in 2019, when a near-mint condition rally version was sold to a private collector for somewhere near $100.000.

Price at launch in 1970:
$3.400
